GMO
genetically modified organism, is a plant,
animal, microorganism or other organism whose genetic makeup has been modified
in a laboratory using genetic engineering or transgenic technology. This
creates combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and virus genes that do not
occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.
Most of the research that tells that GMOs are
safe has been performed by biotechnology companies. Some reviews say GMOs are as safe as the
normal food.
GM foods are foods that
come from organisms whose genetic material or you can call it DNA has been modified
in a way that does not occur naturally, through the introduction of a gene from
a different organism. The technology is sometimes called “modern biotechnology”
or “gene technology”, sometimes also “recombinant DNA technology” or “genetic
engineering”.
Currently available GM
foods are mostly from plants, but in the future foods derived from GM
microorganisms or GM animals are more likely to be introduced on the market.
Most existing genetically modified crops have been developed to improve through
the introduction of resistance to plant diseases or of increased tolerance of
herbicides. GM foods can also allow for reductions in food prices through reliability.
In the future, GMO could
be modifying the nutrient content of food, reducing its allergenic potential or
improving the efficiency of food production systems.
GMO can´t make more of
them, that is why they win lots of money.
If you want more seeds you will have to buy them. It is not like for example: Watermelon, their
seeds can be used to make more watermelons.
GMOs can´t.
